Julie Malia (AKA Jule Malischke) - Solo Guitar & Vocals
Press Release (detailed):
Julie Malia (AKA Jule Malischke) DE
Julie Malia (whose real name is Jule Malischke) is now considered one of the most exciting discoveries in the current guitar and singer/songwriter scene, both nationally and internationally. Through numerous concerts at home and abroad, performances at major guitar festivals, and appearances on radio and TV, she has gained widespread recognition and a strong reputation across Europe.
The uniqueness of Julie Malia, which is certainly her distinctive feature, lies in her musical versatility. With her brilliant guitar playing, she effortlessly moves between various styles of virtuosic concert guitar literature, complex fingerstyle arrangements, and her sung songs, which she presents with great passion and much poetry. In doing so, she bridges the gap between classical and jazz, between instrumental and vocal music, between earthy grooves and celestial sounds, a combination that is unparalleled. Her own songs authentically reflect the life of a young woman, with all her desires and dreams. Occasionally, she adds her own twist to cover songs, giving them a unique identity. She plucks, strums, and strikes her instrument in a way that creates a fresh overall sound.
A sympathetic young musician sits on stage, who, thanks to her unique presence, captivating guitar playing, and exceptional voice, manages to draw the audience in within seconds. Added to this is the casually charming way she moderates and communicates with her audience, always bringing a smile to the faces of the listeners. When Julie picks up her guitar, a silence falls around her. She is a true virtuoso! As a listener, you immediately feel how much Julie values this nonverbal dialogue with her audience. The stage is her “living room,” and the concert is her lifeblood. There’s no diva here; instead, we are invited to enjoy music at the highest level together.
She completed the stages of her guitar studies at various prestigious music colleges: First, she studied classical guitar at the Leopold Mozart Center in Augsburg, followed by a Master’s degree in Jazz/Rock/Pop Acoustic Guitar at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music in Dresden. Finally, she attended the master class for acoustic guitar at the Dresden University of Music, which is the only German university offering this program. Since 2015, she has been teaching guitar there as a lecturer, and since 2021, she has been leading the guitar class in the artistic major for teaching.
In April of the previous year, Julie’s long-awaited new album “Seagull” was released, still under her former name, on her own label, Jule Malischke Records. Her original songs reflect a personal journey—from the search for the courage to pursue her own dreams, to navigating through storms, and ultimately flying forward in self-confidence. The work is complemented by four songs from “other feathers” that accompanied Julie on her journey, and which, in Julie’s arrangements, shine with new brilliance. The album was nominated for the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik” in 2024.

Don Ross & Julie Malia (Guitar & Vocals)
Don Ross, a Canadian fingerstyle guitarist, has been performing on stages around the world for over 30 years. He is regarded as a pioneer of fingerstyle guitar and has been an influence for an entire generation of ambitious musicians since the 1990s. As a solo artist or team player, as a musician, arranger, or composer, his music tells stories that deeply move the listener while being technically brilliant. His unwavering groove is combined with modern (poly-)rhythmic elements, and percussive techniques blend with delicate melodies to create unique, moving soundscapes.
In the 1990s, he was mainly heard in Canada and the USA. In 1996, he won the US National Fingerpick Guitar Championship for the second time (a feat no other guitarist has achieved). Record deals with Sony Music/Columbia Records (Canada) and Narada Records, along with extensive concert tours (Japan, China, Taiwan, India, Russia, Central Europe – several hundred gigs in Germany alone), made him internationally known. Over the past 30 years, he has provided a generation of musicians with vision and perspective. For countless guitarists, he is considered one of the “All Time Favorites.” His current CD “Water” is, on the one hand, a profound reflection of his journey as a musician and composer, and on the other hand, it points far into the future with surprising ideas.
On stage, you experience a musician who builds complex rhythmic structures and soundscapes on an unwavering groove. Technically brilliant in a way rarely heard, he truly delivers a fireworks display of the most demanding fingerstyle guitar. But even with soft tones, delicate as dewdrops, whispering harmonics, and lyrical melodies, he captivates the audience. Both personally and musically, he is a figure of great sympathy, winning the hearts of his listeners.

So now, two musicians stand on stage who couldn’t be more different: the Canadian bear, who sometimes characterizes his style as “Heavy Wood,” and the German “Seagull,” whose ethereal, delicate vocalise reaches into unimaginable realms. What brought these two together, what connects them? First of all, there’s a broad foundation of common ground: Both are at home in the entire spectrum of sophisticated acoustic guitar, from fingerstyle to jazz, in the best sense. Julie can groove like a bear, and Don can also play with intricate virtuosity. Both have distinctive voices, and both present an infectious joy in playing. Then, of course, there are the proverbial opposites that attract. What you immediately feel when they’re on stage together, or when you meet them backstage or at the tour van, is a deep mutual understanding between two personalities, both emotionally and artistically. A fascination with the different approaches to a shared theme, respect for each other’s artistic achievement, curiosity about learning from one another, joy in supporting each other—as side(wo)man, arranger, coach, and companion. What you experience on stage is not one of them performing improvisations first, followed by the other (more in succession than together), nor a game of virtuoso versus sidewoman. No, what you experience is a seamless intertwining of musical ideas that takes your breath away.
Look forward to a truly exceptional musical experience.

She is joined by her long-time companion Isa Kimmel. Originally trained in “classical” violin, there were two key events that profoundly shaped her artistic journey: On one hand, the encounter with jazz violinist Hajo Hoffmann, who showed her the way out of the traditional classical playing style of the violin and into the creativity and individuality of jazz. On the other hand, the choice of her instrument, a five-string violin. With this, she creates her own unique sound, characterized by an impressive personality, surprising timbres, and emotional depth. Whether in virtuoso improvised solos or in sensitive accompaniment, Isa’s playing adds brilliant highlights to the ensemble sound.
